How AI Credits Work: Jasper, Copy.ai, Synthesia, Pictory
Four AI vendors, four definitions of a credit. Here is what each one buys, which ones roll over, what the free tiers cap and what a top-up costs, from the official pricing pages as of October 2026.
This article is a documentation review: it is based on the vendors' own published pages, checked on the date shown. We may earn a commission from some links; it never affects what we recommend.
AI tools increasingly bill in credits instead of words or seats, and each vendor defines a credit differently. Synthesia charges 100 credits per video minute. Pictory prices generative video by the second. Copy.ai says a credit's value depends on workflow complexity. Jasper reserves credits for Business-tier features. This guide compares the four from their official pricing and help pages, checked October 9, 2026, covering what a credit buys, whether unused credits roll over, free plan limits and top-up prices. Where a vendor does not publish a figure, this guide says so instead of guessing.
Learn what one credit buys before comparing prices
Synthesia defines its unit most clearly. Per the Synthesia pricing page, credits are "the shared currency across all AI usage-based features," charged at 100 credits per minute of video and 350 credits per survey response. Dubbing is charged per minute, and lip-sync dubbing costs double.
The same page lists dubbing rates in two places with different numbers: 76 credits per minute in one section, 40 or 80 in another. Treat the on-page calculator as what it calls "Estimates only" and budget on the higher figure.
Pictory runs two meters. Video minutes cover script-to-video and editing. AI credits, per the Pictory help center, cover generative images, video and avatars: 0.6 to 14 credits per image, 20 to 40 credits per second of Veo 3.1 video, 15 credits per 30 avatar seconds.
Copy.ai does not fix the unit at all. Its pricing FAQ defines a credit as "a specific amount of computational power necessary to execute the tasks within a given workflow." Cost varies by workflow steps and output, visible only after a run under "Credits used."
Jasper is the outlier. Its pricing page says "standard content creation in Chat and Canvas is not what drives credit usage." Credits cover usage-based features such as GEO Hub reports and Agents, billed per action, with rates on a separate rate card not reproduced there.
Check whether unused credits reset or roll over
Synthesia resets. The pricing page states "Your plan's extra credits reset each billing period," so an unused monthly allowance is gone at renewal. Annual plans release the full year's credits upfront, which softens the problem for anyone with uneven production months.
Pictory rolls over, but only AI credits. The help center says unused credits "roll over to the next cycle" and purchased credits "never expire for as long as you have an active subscription." Older articles say voiceover minutes reset monthly without carrying over.
Copy.ai and Jasper publish nothing on rollover. Neither pricing page mentions expiry, and the Jasper help center article on credits-based pricing returned HTTP 403 when checked on October 9, 2026. Ask sales for the contract terms in writing before committing to an annual plan.

Read the free plan limits before you sign up
Only one of the four offers a true free plan on its pricing page, and the other three rely on trials or an off-page offer. Here is what each publishes, as of October 2026.
- Synthesia Basic: $0, "10 minutes of video, 3 survey responses and 500 credits every month," one editor, no credit card required, per the pricing page.
- Pictory: no free plan; a 14-day trial with 15 video minutes and a 5-minute cap per generated video. Free users cannot buy credit add-ons, per the help center.
- Copy.ai: no free plan on the pricing page. A company blog post dated May 2026 describes a free account with 2,000 words per month and no credit card.
- Jasper: no free plan; a 7-day trial of Pro. The pricing page does not state trial limits or whether a card is required.
When a Synthesia monthly limit is reached, "video creation and survey response collection pause until your plan renews." There is no automatic overage charge, which protects a budget but can stall a deadline.
Price the top-up before you need it
Synthesia publishes the clearest top-up table. On the monthly Pro plan, 12,000 extra credits cost $176 and 48,000 cost $676, per the pricing page. That works out to roughly $1.47 and $1.41 per video minute, by editorial calculation from the 100-credits-per-minute rate.
Credits bought separately on Synthesia are "valid for 12 months," far longer than the monthly plan allowance. For an occasional heavy month, a one-time purchase can beat upgrading the whole plan.
Pictory sells recurring add-ons that are "granted immediately," but the Pictory pricing page does not list a price per credit pack. Teams plans pool credits across the workspace, calculated as seats multiplied by credits per seat.
Copy.ai says users "can easily add credits to your balance" without listing a price. Jasper does not list overage pricing either; extra Pro seats and higher limits require a Business conversation with sales.

Compare the four entry plans side by side
These figures come from each vendor's pricing page as of October 2026, lowest paid plan, billed monthly, with the annual-billing rate in parentheses.
- Jasper Pro: $69 per seat per month ($59 billed yearly). No credit allowance published; credits apply mainly to Business features.
- Copy.ai Chat: $29 per month ($24 billed yearly), 5 seats, unlimited chat words, no workflow credits listed. Growth starts at $1,000 per month with 20,000 credits.
- Synthesia Starter: $29 per month ($18 billed yearly), 1,250 credits, roughly 12 extra video minutes on top of the free 10.
- Pictory Starter: $29 per month ($25 billed yearly), 200 video minutes, 100 AI credits, 60 ElevenLabs voice minutes, 1 user.
The Pictory annual numbers look larger because the page shows them per year: 2,400 video minutes and 1,200 AI credits on Starter. Divide by twelve before comparing with monthly plans.
Watch for the costs pricing pages mention only in passing
Separate meters add up. Pictory keeps ElevenLabs voice minutes outside AI credits. Jasper's help center notes that Semrush API credits used through Jasper draw from the connected Semrush plan, not from Jasper. Budget for each meter, not just the headline credit number.
Premium options multiply the rate. Synthesia lip-sync dubbing costs double. Pictory's Veo 3.1 with audio costs 40 credits per second, twice the silent rate, and custom avatars cost 35 credits per 30 seconds versus 15 for stock.
Annual commitments are front-loaded. Jasper's annual Pro is "paid upfront with a 12-month commitment," and Business begins with a 12-month term. Synthesia annual plans release credits upfront; the page does not describe refunds for unused annual credits.
Pictory downgrades take effect at the end of the billing cycle, while upgrades bill a prorated charge immediately. Copy.ai follows the same pattern, with upgrades prorated and downgrades credited on the next month's bill.
Frequently asked questions
Do Synthesia credits roll over?
Not plan credits. The pricing page says "Your plan's extra credits reset each billing period." Credits bought separately are different and remain "valid for 12 months," so a one-time top-up is the safer way to bank capacity.
Is a Copy.ai credit a fixed amount?
No. Copy.ai defines a credit by computational work, so the same workflow can cost different amounts depending on steps and output length. The Growth plan includes 20,000 credits per month; the page gives no per-run average.
Does Jasper Pro include credits?
The pricing page does not list a credit allowance for Pro. It says credits drive usage-based features like GEO Hub and Agents on Business, while Chat and Canvas creation does not consume credits. Confirm with Jasper sales before relying on Pro for agent work.
Bottom line
Synthesia is the easiest to budget: a published rate per minute, a published top-up table and a real free plan, offset by no rollover on plan credits. Pictory rewards uneven workloads with rolling AI credits but runs several separate meters.
Copy.ai and Jasper leave the most unanswered. Before signing either, get the credit allowance, rollover rule and overage price in writing from sales. Re-check every page linked above before buying; vendors change these numbers often, and this comparison reflects October 2026.
