ElevenLabs vs Descript: How AI Audio Credits Are Counted

ElevenLabs sells credits that roughly equal characters. Descript sells media hours and a separate pool of AI credits. Here is what each unit buys, which ones roll over and what the free tiers cap, from the official pricing pages as of October 2026.

ElevenLabs vs Descript: How AI Audio Credits Are Counted

ElevenLabs and Descript both generate speech, but they meter it in different units. ElevenLabs charges credits, where 10,000 credits buy roughly 10 minutes of text to speech. Descript charges media hours for anything you upload or record, plus a second pool of AI credits for generative features. This guide reads both pricing pages as checked on October 10, 2026, and explains what a unit buys, whether unused balance carries over, what the free plans allow and where the top-up rules differ. Where a page leaves a figure out, the guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Learn what one unit buys on each platform

ElevenLabs uses one currency. Per the ElevenLabs pricing page, the Free plan includes 10,000 credits per month, which the page equates to about 10 minutes of text to speech. Every paid tier scales the same way: 30,000 credits on Starter, 121,000 on Creator, 600,000 on Pro.

Descript runs two meters. The Descript pricing page lists media hours, which cover recording, uploads and transcription, and AI credits, which cover generative features such as AI speech and clones. The Free plan gets 1 hour of media per month and 100 AI credits, granted once.

The practical difference: on ElevenLabs the budget question is how many characters you will synthesize. On Descript it is how many hours of audio or video you will edit, with AI generation as a smaller side pool. A podcast editor and a voiceover producer will exhaust different meters first.

Neither page publishes a fixed character-per-credit or seconds-per-credit table for every feature. ElevenLabs states that some features, such as music and dubbing, draw credits at different rates. Descript marks many AI tools as "Limited" on Free without stating a number. This mirrors the ambiguity covered in how AI credits work at Jasper, Copy.ai, Synthesia and Pictory.

Compare the plan ladders side by side

The figures below come from each pricing page on October 10, 2026. ElevenLabs shows annual-billing equivalents clearly; its monthly-billed Starter and Creator prices were displayed as first-month promotions ($1 and $11) rather than a standing rate, so the annual figures are quoted here.

  • ElevenLabs Starter: $5 per month billed annually, 30,000 credits, instant voice cloning, commercial license, 10 custom voice slots.
  • ElevenLabs Creator: $18.33 per month billed annually, 121,000 credits, one professional voice clone, 30 custom voice slots.
  • ElevenLabs Pro: $99 per month, or $82.50 billed annually, 600,000 credits, 160 custom voice slots. Scale ($299) and Business ($990) add seats and 1.8 million and 6 million credits.
  • Descript Hobbyist: $16 or $24 per person per month, 10 media hours, 400 AI credits, 1080p export, no watermark, 100 GB storage.
  • Descript Creator: $24 or $35, 30 media hours, 800 AI credits, 4K export, 1 TB storage, access to top-ups.
  • Descript Business: $50 or $65, 40 media hours, 1,500 AI credits, 2 TB storage, up to 5 seats billed separately.

Descript shows two prices per tier beside a monthly and annual toggle without labeling which is which. The page says annual billing saves "up to 35% over monthly plan," so the lower figure is read here as the annual rate. Confirm in checkout before paying.

Check whether unused balance rolls over

ElevenLabs publishes a rollover rule, and it is more generous than most AI vendors. Unused credits carry forward for up to two months, capped at twice the monthly quota, so a balance can reach at most three times the monthly allowance. The page states "Rollover does not apply to the Free plan."

The rule has a trap. Rollover applies only while a paid subscription stays active at the same or higher tier. Downgrading or cancelling forfeits unused credits at the end of the cycle. A producer planning a quiet quarter should pause spending by using the banked balance, not by dropping a tier.

Descript publishes no rollover language at all. The pricing page says nothing about whether unused media hours or AI credits carry into the next month, and the 100 free AI credits are described as a one-time grant. Assume monthly allowances reset until Descript states otherwise in writing.

Read the free plan limits before you build on them

The ElevenLabs Free plan is usable for testing voices but not for publishing. It includes text to speech, speech to text, sound effects, voice design and three Studio projects. It excludes the commercial license, instant voice cloning, dubbing studio and the larger project allowance. Output made on Free is for non-commercial use.

The Descript Free plan is a watermark tier. Exports are 720p with a watermark, storage is 5 GB, uploads are capped at 1 GB per file and the media allowance is 1 hour per month. One recorded podcast episode plus a retake can consume the whole month.

For a side-by-side, the same pattern shows up in Otter versus Fathom free plan limits: free tiers are built to prove the workflow, not to run it. Read the exclusion list, not just the included features, before relying on either.

Price the top-up and the seat before you commit

ElevenLabs sells pay-as-you-go top-up credits that sit outside the rollover cap, which makes them the safer way to bank capacity. The pricing page does not list a top-up price per credit on the plan cards, so the rate appears only inside the account. Ask for it before an annual commitment.

Descript restricts top-ups by tier. Creator and Business include access to top-ups for extra media hours and AI credits; Free and Hobbyist do not. A Hobbyist user who runs out of hours in week three has one option, which is upgrading for the rest of the month.

Seats are priced differently too. ElevenLabs bundles seats into Scale (3) and Business (10). Descript bills each extra person separately on Creator and Business, so a three-person team on Creator pays three times the per-person rate. Multiply before comparing the two headline prices.

One promotional note: on October 10, 2026, the ElevenLabs page carried a banner offering triple credits on Creator and above until October 12, and a two-week double-credit trial of its v4 model. Promotions change weekly; budget on the standing allowance, not the banner. The same caution applies to the plan multiples in Claude Free versus Pro versus Max.

Frequently asked questions

How many minutes of speech do 10,000 ElevenLabs credits make?

About 10 minutes of text to speech, per the pricing page checked October 10, 2026. The page gives the conversion as an approximation because some features, such as music and dubbing, draw credits at different rates than standard text to speech.

Do Descript media hours roll over?

The Descript pricing page publishes no rollover rule for media hours or AI credits as of October 2026. The 100 AI credits on Free are described as one-time. Treat monthly allowances as resetting until Descript confirms otherwise in writing.

Can I use ElevenLabs Free output commercially?

No. The commercial license is listed as part of the Starter plan and above. Free includes text to speech, speech to text and sound effects, but the pricing page lists the commercial license among the features Free does not include.

Which is cheaper for a solo podcaster?

It depends on the meter. Ten hours of editing a month fits Descript Hobbyist at $16 to $24. Ten minutes of narration a month fits ElevenLabs Free, and 30 minutes fits Starter at $5 billed annually. Most podcasters need both tools' meters, so price each separately.

Bottom line

ElevenLabs is the easier budget: one currency, a published rollover rule and a stated minutes-per-credit conversion, offset by promotional monthly prices that obscure the standing rate. Descript is the easier workflow for editing but publishes no rollover rule and restricts top-ups to its two upper tiers.

Decide which meter you will exhaust first, hours of media or minutes of synthesized speech, then buy the plan that covers that meter with room to spare. Re-check both pricing pages before paying; every figure above reflects October 10, 2026, and both vendors change plans without notice.
