Perplexity Pro vs Free: Where the Limits Sit

Perplexity publishes hard numbers for its free tier and for enterprise seats, but not for individual Pro. Free gets 3 Pro Searches a day and 1 research query a month; Pro, at $17 a month billed annually, is described only as weekly limits for average use. Here is every figure the vendor does publish, read October 10, 2026.

Perplexity Pro vs Free: Where the Limits Sit

The free Perplexity tier is capped at 3 Pro Searches per day and 1 research query per month, with no advanced models, no image generation and no browser agent.

Pro, listed at $17 per month when billed annually, removes those locks and is described as raising every limit, but the company publishes no number for Pro usage: the comparison table reads "Weekly limits (average use)." Hard figures reappear only on enterprise seats.

This guide reads the official pricing page and two help centre articles, checked October 10, 2026, and reports what is published and what is not.

The free tier publishes its caps, and they are small

Perplexity's help centre calls the free tier Standard and lists what it includes: search history access, "practically unlimited basic searches," a "very limited amount of Pro Searches" and basic file uploads.

The same page states the exclusions plainly: "No access to advanced AI models, image generation, or premium support." The plan comparison table attaches numbers to the main rows.

  • Pro Searches: 3 per day on free, against "Weekly limits (average use)" on Pro.
  • Research queries: 1 per month on free, against "Monthly limits (average use)" on Pro.
  • Browser agent queries through Comet Assistant: not available on free.
  • File and app creation: not available on free; file uploads marked only "Limited."
  • Advanced AI models and image generation: marked No on free, Yes on Pro, Max and both enterprise tiers.

Three Pro Searches a day is the figure that decides most upgrades. It is enough to test the product and not enough to use it for a working day, which is plainly the intent.

Compare that with the hard caps published by meeting tools in our note on Otter and Fathom free plan limits. Vendors that print a daily number are easier to budget against than vendors that print a multiple.

Pro costs $17 a month annually, with unpublished usage limits

The pricing page lists Pro at "$17 /month when billed annually" and describes it as "Better answers. More answers. Built for serious work." By editorial calculation that is $204 for a year, paid up front.

No monthly-billing figure appeared on the page we read, so none is quoted here. Buyers who want month-to-month billing should confirm the rate in checkout.

The listed Pro inclusions are expanded Computer access, 4,000 bonus credits, deep research, access to top AI models, selection between models, document and app creation, and "more usage limits and memory."

The help centre adds detail: "10x as many citations per answer," increased photo uploads, up to 50 file uploads per project, limited video generation and exclusive support channels.

The comparison table marks web answers, file uploads and asset generation at 10x the free tier, and video generation at 5x.

Those multiples are the whole story on Pro capacity. Because the free baseline for file uploads is published only as "Limited," a 10x multiple cannot be converted into a number. It is the same problem as the usage multiples in Claude Free, Pro and Max.

Max is ten times the price and the only tier with a credit meter

Max is listed at "$167 /month when billed annually," which is $2,004 a year by editorial calculation. A footnote states that Max annual billing is only available on perplexity.ai, not through app stores.

Max is also the only individual tier with a published credit figure: 10,000 monthly credits plus 35,000 bonus credits, against 4,000 bonus credits and no monthly allowance on Pro.

Other Max-only rows in the table are Model Council and Brain, a memory system the help centre describes as a research preview that is "Free during the current preview period." Max also carries dedicated support rather than priority support.

One inconsistency is worth flagging. The pricing page FAQ says Pro "adds Perplexity Computer, premium data sources like PitchBook and Statista, search across the web, files, and apps, model council," while the comparison table on the same page marks Model Council as unavailable on Pro.

Where a vendor's own two tables disagree, the safe assumption is the more restrictive one. Ask support before buying Pro for a feature named only in prose.

Hard numbers return on the enterprise and education tiers

Enterprise Pro is listed at per-seat pricing that "starts at $40/month or $400/year/seat." Enterprise Max is quoted on request. Both publish exact caps where the individual tiers do not.

  • Pro Searches: 400 per week on Enterprise Pro, 4,000 per week on Enterprise Max.
  • Research queries: 50 per month on Enterprise Pro, 500 per month on Enterprise Max.
  • Comet Assistant queries: 80 per month on Enterprise Pro, 800 per month on Enterprise Max.
  • File and app creation: 50 per month on Enterprise Pro, 500 per month on Enterprise Max.
  • File upload sessions: 100 per week on Enterprise Pro, 1,000 per week on Enterprise Max.

Enterprise Max also specifies video output: 15 videos per month, each 8 seconds long with audio, in 16:9 landscape. That is the only numeric video figure anywhere on these pages.

Education Pro is listed at $10 per month with verification through SheerID and, unusually, includes unlimited Pro Searches. For students the economics are different from every other tier here.

One retirement is dated in the documentation: the Organization File Repository is being retired on October 1, 2026, and files left after the deadline will be deleted. Existing enterprise customers were told to move their files.

Decide by the lock you hit, not by the model list

Stay on free if citations and basic search answer your questions and three Pro Searches a day do not interrupt you. The help centre says the default Best mode is "available without quota limits," which makes free more usable than the table suggests.

Move to Pro when advanced models, image generation, file analysis or deep research matter, since those are hard locks on free rather than throttles. The help centre names GPT-5.2, Claude Sonnet 4.6 and Gemini 3.1 Pro among the models Pro unlocks.

Move to Max only if Pro's unpublished ceiling is actually stopping work, or if Model Council and the 10,000 monthly credits are the point. At ten times the price, that is a decision to make after Pro, not instead of it.

Note one honest caveat from the vendor: "For Advanced AI model queries, access may be limited during weeks of especially heavy usage." Paid access to frontier models is best-effort, not guaranteed.

Frequently asked questions

How many Pro Searches does the free plan get?

Three per day, per the plan comparison table in Perplexity's help centre, checked October 10, 2026. Free also gets one research query per month, practically unlimited basic searches and limited file uploads.

How much does Perplexity Pro cost?

The pricing page lists $17 per month when billed annually, which is $204 a year by editorial calculation. A monthly-billing price did not appear on the page read on October 10, 2026.

Does Perplexity publish Pro usage limits?

No. The comparison table describes Pro as weekly and monthly limits for average use, without numbers. Published numeric caps exist only for the free tier and the two enterprise tiers.

Is Perplexity Max worth ten times Pro?

Only for sustained heavy research. Max adds 10,000 monthly credits, 35,000 bonus credits, Model Council, Brain and dedicated support at $167 per month billed annually, against $17 for Pro.

Is there a student discount for Perplexity?

Yes. Education Pro is listed at $10 per month with verification through SheerID and includes unlimited Pro Searches, which no other individual tier publishes.

Is free-tier data used for training?

The table lists standard data privacy on free, opt-out of AI training on Pro, Max and Education Pro, and data never used for model training on both enterprise tiers.

Bottom line

Free is a trial with an honest number attached. Pro is a real product with a vague one. Enterprise is where Perplexity publishes caps precise enough to plan against, at $40 per seat per month or above.

Buy Pro for the feature locks it removes, not for a capacity figure that does not exist publicly. Every figure here is as of October 10, 2026.
