Do Unused AI Credits Roll Over? What Vendors Say
Most AI subscriptions quietly delete what you did not spend. HeyGen is the exception among the five vendors read for this note: monthly subscribers keep unused credits for one more month, and annual subscribers accumulate them until renewal. VEED, Colossyan and Synthesia all state in writing that the allowance resets. Descript says nothing either way.
This article is a documentation review: it is based on the vendors' own published pages, checked on the date shown. We may earn a commission from some links; it never affects what we recommend.
Rollover is the clause that decides whether a credit allowance is a budget or a deadline. Five vendor pages were read on October 23, 2026, and four of them answer the question in their own FAQ. HeyGen rolls unused credits forward for one extra month.
VEED says credits "do not carry over". Colossyan says unused minutes "will not roll over". Synthesia says the allowance resets each billing period. Descript sells top-ups but states nothing about expiry.
The pattern matters more than any single plan price, because it sets how evenly you have to spend.
HeyGen is the only vendor here that carries credits forward
HeyGen's FAQ answers the question directly and in two parts, one for each billing cycle.
For monthly plans: "Monthly subscribers' unused credits roll over for one more month." For annual plans: "Annual subscribers' credits accumulate until their annual renewal date."
The page frames that as a reason to buy the year, noting annual subscribers "also get better credit rollover: credits accumulate all year until renewal, instead of for just one cycle."
One limit applies to both. The cancellation answer states that credits do not carry over once a subscription lapses: "your previous cycle credits will expire and not roll over if your subscription is not active."
- HeyGen monthly prices, as published: Free $0, Creator $29, Pro from $49, Business $149 a month plus $20 per seat a month.
- Credit allowances: 600 a month on Creator, 1,000 on Pro, 1,500 on Business.
- The Pro tiers scale on credits alone, "from 1,000 credits/mo at $49 to 100,000 credits/mo at $4,300", with the same feature set throughout.
- Free is capped at three watermarked videos a month rather than a credit figure.
One caveat on reading that page from outside the United States: it served Vietnamese interface labels from our location, with the credit counts printed as "600 tin dung" and "1.000 tin dung".
The dollar figures stayed in USD, so they are quoted exactly as shown and nothing is converted here. HeyGen's video credit rates sit in Runway versus HeyGen AI video credits.
VEED, Colossyan and Synthesia all void the remainder
VEED's wording is the shortest of the three. A plan "includes a set amount of AI credits each month or year", the "full allowance refreshes when your subscription renews", and "Credits do not carry over."
Colossyan applies the same rule to minutes rather than credits: "If you are under your video minute limit at the end of a billing period, your unused minutes will not roll over."
Synthesia's answer is the most detailed, and it splits the allowance in two. The monthly allowance of 10 minutes of video, three survey responses and 500 credits, plus any plan credits, "reset each billing period."
Credits bought separately are treated differently: they "are valid for 12 months." Subscription credits expire, purchased credits do not, which is the same split several image vendors use.
- Annual billing does not create rollover at any of the three; it releases the whole year upfront instead.
- Colossyan confirms it: "You'll receive all of your minutes for the year upon purchasing an annual plan."
- Synthesia confirms it: "On annual plans the year's credits are available upfront."
- Deleting work does not reclaim allowance. Colossyan states that "deleting generated videos will not result in a credit of minutes to your allowance."
- Drafting is free at Colossyan: only generated videos count, so iteration before export costs nothing.

Descript is the gap in the set
Descript's pricing page lists both allowances clearly: media minutes and AI credits, each per editor per month, with 400 credits on the entry paid tier, 800 on the next and 1,500 above that.
It also advertises "Access to top ups for more media hours and AI credits" on its two higher tiers, which implies allowances run out. What it does not say anywhere is whether unspent ones survive the month.
That absence is a reading result, not a vendor policy. The page did not state a rollover rule on October 23, 2026; the answer may well sit in the help centre.
Expiry hurts most where the per-action rate is high
A voided allowance costs more when a single action eats a large share of it. Synthesia's own rate card shows how wide that range can be inside one product.
- Studio video: 100 credits a minute, with the first 10 minutes included on every plan.
- Dubbing: 76 credits a minute in the plan picker.
- Conversational avatars: 10 credits a minute for the avatar alone, 20 with the full widget.
- Survey responses: 350 credits each after the three included every month.
- Syren, the vendor's video agent: "A 1-min video typically uses 1,000- 2000 credits."
On the Pro plan's 6,000 credits a month, that is 60 Studio minutes or roughly three to six Syren minutes, by editorial calculation from the published rates.
A buyer who plans around Studio video and then switches to the agent can burn the month in an afternoon, with no carry-over to soften it. Rate and expiry have to be read together, never separately.
What the rule actually changes about your spending
A non-rollover allowance is a use-it-or-lose-it deadline on every billing date, which penalises uneven work. Agencies with a quiet February and a busy March pay twice for the same volume.
Annual upfront release solves that without rollover, because the deadline moves 12 months out. It also locks the money in, which is the trade examined in what annual billing on an AI tool saves.
Rollover with a one-month window, as HeyGen offers monthly subscribers, smooths a single slow month and nothing longer. It is a buffer, not a bank.
Before committing, check the rule in the FAQ and not the feature table, then size the plan to your quietest month rather than your busiest. The rest of the method is in how to read an AI credit pricing page.
Frequently asked questions
Which AI vendors let unused credits roll over?
Of the five pages read on October 23, 2026, only HeyGen does: one extra month for monthly subscribers, accumulation until renewal for annual ones. VEED, Colossyan and Synthesia state the opposite, and Descript does not say.
Does annual billing make credits roll over?
No. It releases the full year's allowance at purchase instead, which Colossyan and Synthesia both confirm in writing. The expiry date moves from monthly to annual, but nothing accumulates beyond it.
Do credits bought as top-ups expire too?
Not on the same schedule. Synthesia states that separately purchased credits "are valid for 12 months" while subscription credits reset each billing period. Several image vendors apply the same split between bought and included credits.
What happens to credits when a subscription is cancelled?
HeyGen states you keep remaining credits until the end of the current billing cycle, then the account moves to the Free plan and unused credits do not carry over. An inactive subscription voids them regardless of the rollover rule.
Do deleted projects return the allowance?
No, at least not at Colossyan, whose FAQ says deleting generated videos will not credit minutes back. Drafts are free there, though, because only generated videos count against the limit.
Bottom line
Treat rollover as a price feature, not a technicality. Two plans with the same credit figure are not the same purchase if one of them deletes the remainder every 30 days.
Read the FAQ before the feature table, because the rule almost never appears beside the allowance. Then size the subscription to the month you use least.
